Step 1: turn on DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller pairing mode. Make sure the light bar on the controller is off. If the light bar is on, press and hold the PS button until it turns off. If a USB cable is connected to the controller, disconnect it. While pressing and holding the SHARE button, press and hold the PS Button until the light bar flashes. I got a Nyko Core PS3 controller offbrand from wal-mart to work right out of the box on windows 7. I have also not heard of anyone having problems with a 360 controller, I just don't like 360 controllers. You do have to set up the controller using a separated config program outside of the game. It should be in your start menu.
