The 2022 specials of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who are three additional episodes that are set to follow the programme's thirteenth series.[1] The first special is set to air on 1 January 2022 with the additional episodes airing later in the same year.[2] They will be the final episodes to feature Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor and Chris Chibnall as showrunner.[3]

Jodie Whittaker is set to return as the Thirteenth Doctor for the three episodes.[4] The final special will be the last episode to feature Whittaker in the role.[5]

On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall, who serves as executive producer and showrunner of the series, would both be departing the series after a series of specials in 2022.[6] Chibnall stated that their departures was part of a 'three series and out deal' he made with Whittaker prior to the eleventh series.[7] The first two episodes were produced as part of the eight episodes ordered for the thirteenth series and were already set to be held for 2022.[8] The third episode was later ordered as an additional special to serve as Whittaker's regeneration episode and is set to be a feature-length episode.[9] The BBC is describing the final episode as an 'epic blockbuster special.'[10] Executive Producer Matt Stevens, who joined the series alongside Chibnall, is also set to depart once production is complete.[11]

The first two episodes were filmed in the same production run as the thirteenth series.[12]
Release[edit]
The first of the three specials is set to air on 1 January 2022 in the series traditional New Years Day time slot.[13] The second special is expected to air in late-Spring 2022 with the third and final set to air in Autumn 2022 as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations.[14]
